Where Is Plymouth Wisconsin? 49 Miles North of Milwaukee

Plymouth is a Sheboygan County city on the Mullet River, about 13 miles west of Sheboygan, with Road America about 4 miles north.

The answer to where is Plymouth, Wisconsin, is short: the city of Plymouth sits in Sheboygan County, in the east of the state, on the Mullet River where State Highways 57, 67 and 23 meet. Lake Michigan and the city of Sheboygan are about 13 miles east, Milwaukee is about 49 miles south, and Road America, the road-racing circuit, is about 4 miles north.

Distances in this guide are straight-line, measured from downtown Plymouth's map point to each place, so the road miles run a little longer.

Which Plymouth do you mean?

Wisconsin has more than one Plymouth, and search results mix them up. The one this guide covers is the City of Plymouth in Sheboygan County, population 8,932 at the 2020 census.

Around the city is a separate Town of Plymouth, the rural township that surrounds it, so a farm with a Plymouth address may sit outside the city limits. The other two are towns in other counties. The Town of Plymouth in Rock County, in the south of the state, had 1,245 people at the 2020 census and includes the community of Hanover. The Town of Plymouth in Juneau County had 578 people at the 2020 census.

If your directions point you toward Rock or Juneau County, you have the wrong Plymouth for cheese and racing.

For a day on Lake Michigan, pair Plymouth with the things to do in Sheboygan, about 13 miles east.

Getting in by highway and by trail

Three state highways run through Plymouth: 57, 67 and 23. Road America's address is on Highway 67 north of town, and the track's own hotel advice calls Plymouth convenient for visitors coming from the south or west.

Road America is a road-racing circuit on 640 acres, with a driving school, about 3.9 miles north of downtown Plymouth. On race weekends the track advises visitors to allow extra travel time, so leave early if you are driving in on the day.

Cyclists can arrive another way. The Old Plank Road Trail runs about 21 miles to the county line, then continues into Fond du Lac County, and its Plymouth trailhead is about 2 miles east of downtown.

The Old Plank Road Trail is shared by cyclists, walkers, joggers, mopeds and horse riders, and by snowmobiles in winter. From the Plymouth trailhead it is about 11 miles east to downtown Sheboygan.

Why Plymouth is called the Hub City and the Cheese Capital

Plymouth has two nicknames, and both come from work. Hub City comes from its past as a center of wooden wheelwrighting. The Cheese Capital of the World is how the city advertises itself today, and Wikipedia lists four cheese processing facilities in town: Sargento, Masters Gallery, Sartori and Great Lakes Cheese.

The Cheese Capital of the World arch at 603 East Mill Street marks the edge of the historic downtown, about a third of a mile east of the town's map point. Murals, stores, bars and restaurants are close by, so it works as the place to park and start walking.

A few blocks west, the Cheese Counter and Dairy Heritage Center at 133 East Mill Street sells Wisconsin cheeses and curds and has a touch-screen exhibit on the history of cheese in Plymouth.

Race weekends and fair weekend

Two kinds of weekend change the trip into town. For Road America race weekends, the track's August 2026 lodging advice says nearby hotels can fill well in advance and tells Plymouth guests to allow extra time on the road. The county fair is the other: the Sheboygan County Fair runs over Labor Day weekend at Sheboygan County Fair Park, 229 Fairview Drive, inside Plymouth.

On those weekends, arrive earlier than you think you need to, and book rooms as soon as your dates are set.

Where to start once you arrive

On arrival, park downtown on Mill Street and walk from the arch to the Cheese Counter, about 0.3 mile. From the arch, the murals, the arts center and the trails fill out an afternoon in Plymouth.

If you are staying over, Plymouth Suites Hotel at 606 East Mill Street is at the arch end of downtown, with renovated suites and a staff-free check-in backed by phone support. Its listing also offers monthly stays.

The other rooms in town, and their distance to the track, are compared in Plymouth hotels.

The hotel's listing puts downtown dining within walking distance, and several places to eat in Plymouth are on the same street, Red Shorts Cafe at 210 East Mill and Hub City Restaurant at 409 East Mill among them.
