Camping in Plymouth Starts at Road America's 1,000 Sites

Race-weekend camping at Road America, pools at Plymouth Rock, a farm campground beside a horse course and the state forest sites to the west.

Camping in Plymouth comes in three forms: a campsite at Road America on a race weekend, a site or cabin at Plymouth Rock Campground about 0.7 mile from the track, or a quieter pitch at Sundance Farm Campground about 2.5 miles northwest of downtown. All three are north or northwest of town, toward the track, so a camper here is never far from the circuit or the lakes.

Distances below are straight-line, measured from each listing's map pin.

Camping at Road America

Road America runs its own campground on the grounds, and its camping is sold by event rather than by the night. The track says it has more than 1,000 campsites across eight camping zones placed around the circuit.

Road America, about 3.9 miles north of downtown Plymouth on Highway 67, is a racetrack on 640 acres of grounds that runs a driving school. Its camping reservations are tied to specific events, and any camping left over can be bought at the gate on the first day of the event, subject to availability.

Standard sites measure about 20 by 40 feet, according to the track's August 2026 camping article. Tents and pop-up campers mostly go in Zones 1 through 4, and Zone 7 is the overflow area for tents, pop-ups and motorhomes without power.

Electric motorhome sites have 50-amp service, and trackside electric sites in parts of Zones 5 and 6 sit close to the racing and must be reserved ahead. Bring your own cords and adapters for the electric sites, and note that individual sites have no water hookups.

The grounds have permanent restrooms and showers in the camping areas and two dump stations, and the current camping map shows where they are along with concessions and shuttle stops. Portable grills and contained, off-ground fire pits are allowed under the track's rules, and generator hours are set in the current camping regulations.

At some events all camping traffic is sent through Gate 4 on County Road J, so check the event page before you tow in. Rules on generators, vehicles, fires and pets can change from event to event, the track says, so read them for your weekend.

Campendium lists the track's campground as open seasonally from May to September, but the race calendar sets the real camping dates each year.

Plymouth Rock Campground

Plymouth Rock is a private campground just east of the track, and Road America's own visitor information names it as a nearby camping option.

Plymouth Rock Campground on Lando Street sits about 0.7 mile east of Road America and about 3.8 miles north of downtown Plymouth. Its listing describes three pool areas, several bathhouses, open grass under mature trees, and both camper sites and rental accommodations.

The listing links to Thousand Trails for bookings, so rates and site types come from that page. For campers without a tent, the rustic cabin at Plymouth Rock is listed separately and booked through a travel site.

The setting is the draw for active campers. The Rocky Knoll mountain bike trailhead is about a quarter mile from the campground, with a rocky XC red trail, the flowy Medicine Bottle green trail and a jump area.

The Little Elkhart Lake boat landing is about a third of a mile away, and Mac's Pond, with trails and fishing, is about 0.6 mile east.

One Campendium review of Plymouth Rock notes that some sites are not very level, so bring leveling blocks.

Sundance Farm Campground

Sundance Farm is the farm-side alternative, sitting closer to town than to the track.

Sundance Farm Campground on Woodland Road has 48 sites, including new full-hookup sites and some sites for tents, about 2.5 miles northwest of downtown and about 1.9 miles southwest of Road America. Its sites have leveled gravel pads, picnic tables and fire rings, and its listing offers Wi-Fi at many of them.

The campground sits beside an equestrian cross-country course, so you can watch riders jumping their horses from camp. Its listing lists two bathroom and shower buildings, two RV dump stations, laundry, and firewood and ice for sale.

For a hike from camp, the Ice Age Trail Greenbush trailhead on County Road P is about 1.9 miles northwest, with parking for about ten cars and a rolling segment of rock and gravel that passes under Highway 23.

Which campground fits your weekend

If the race is the whole point, camp at the track: you are already inside the gates, and the trackside electric sites put you beside the action. If you want pools for the kids, Plymouth Rock is under a mile from the track. If you want full hookups and gravel pads, Sundance Farm has 48 sites and sits about 1.9 miles from Road America.

For a tent weekend in the woods with beaches and hiking, look west to the state forest. Whichever you choose, carry a full water tank or jugs if you are heading to the track, since its sites have no water hookups.

RV parking and a youth camp

Glacier Ridge Estate, a bed and breakfast about 0.7 mile northwest of Road America, offers asphalt parking for RVs and semi-trucks with electric and water hookups. That makes it an option for a race team or a motorhome that wants hookups off the track grounds.

Camp Anokijig, about 4.2 miles north of downtown, is a children's camp founded in 1926 on a glacial lake, with 400 acres, group campouts and school field trips, rather than a public campground. Families looking for summer camp registration will find it there; travelers looking for a campsite will not.

State forest campgrounds nearby

West of Plymouth, the Kettle Moraine State Forest Northern Unit adds state campgrounds to the mix. The Greenbush Recreation Area near Glenbeulah, about 6.1 miles west of downtown, is part of the forest, and its listing mentions hiking, mountain biking, groomed ski trails, three swimming beaches and camping.

The campgrounds around Cascade, including those on Crooked Lake and Lake Ellen, are laid out in camping near Cascade.

For a private park with a pool, Sun Retreats Fond du Lac East in Glenbeulah, about 9.3 miles west of downtown Plymouth, has three swimming pools, an ice cream shop, mini golf and a playground, according to its listing. The wider forest, from the scenic drive to the lakes, is covered in the Kettle Moraine State Forest Northern Unit.

Trails, lakes and town from camp

Crystal Lake, about 2 miles west of Plymouth Rock, has a boat launch and parking for fishing or a paddle on an off day from the track. The lakes, the Old Plank Road Trail and the city parks are all in parks in Plymouth.

If the weather turns or someone in the group wants a real bed, the Plymouth hotels are between about 3.9 and 5 miles from the track.

For supplies and a meal, JAAAGZ is about a mile south of Plymouth Rock on Highway 67, and Plymouth, with its grocery stores and Mill Street restaurants, is about 4 miles south. Off the track, the cheese arch, the Plymouth Arts Center, the murals and the Mill Street restaurants are all waiting in downtown Plymouth, so a rain delay need not mean a day in the tent.
