Things to Do in Menomonee Falls: Kilns, Cats & the Bugline

The river falls and lime kilns downtown, a 16-mile rail trail west to Merton, a historic farmstead, a cat figurine museum, two indoor pickleball clubs and the cafes in between.

Most things to do in Menomonee Falls sit within reach of the Menomonee River, which drops over rock outcroppings at the edge of downtown, or of the old rail line that leaves the village heading west. That gives you preserved lime kilns, a 16-mile paved trail, a historic farmstead showing life from the mid-1800s, a museum of cat figurines and two indoor pickleball clubs, all inside one Waukesha County village.

Start at the water downtown, ride or walk west on the Bugline when the weather allows, and keep the indoor half of this list for the long Wisconsin winter.

Where are the falls in Menomonee Falls?

The falls the village is named for are in Lime Kiln Park, a 19-acre park on both sides of the Menomonee River between Main Street and Arthur Avenue. A paved trail leads past the preserved lime kilns, the rock outcroppings and the falls themselves.

The park takes its name from the Garwin Mace Lime Kilns, which operated on the site in the late 19th century. Kilns like these burned limestone into lime for mortar and plaster, and the stone stacks still stand beside the path.

Mill Pond Park holds the Lepper Dam spillway and a gazebo, and the village's parks and trails guide says they may be the most photographed spots in the village. Islands.com, writing in October 2025, dates the first dam here to 1851, built for a flour mill, and the current one to 1954.

The Menomonee River Trail runs north to south through Lime Kiln Park and carries on for about 2.6 miles into Rotary Park, so a look at the falls can turn into a proper walk. Village parks are open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. from April to October and 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. from November to March.

The Menomonee River Parkway follows the river for about 2 miles across 55 acres, with foot bridges, open fields and a paddle launch, so bring a kayak if you have one.

Both parks sit at the edge of downtown Menomonee Falls, where the cafes and shops of Main Street and Appleton Avenue begin.

The Bugline Trail and Menomonee Park

The Bugline Trail is a 16-mile asphalt trail that runs from Menomonee Falls west to the Village of Merton. It was built in 1983 on the former Chicago, Milwaukee, Saint Paul and Pacific Railroad right-of-way, and at eight feet wide it has room for a bike to pass a family on foot.

Waukesha County maintains it, and Islands.com points out the limestone quarries from the village's early years that you pass along the way.

Menomonee Park is a Waukesha County park on Town Line Road with a 16-acre quarry lake for swimming and seven reservable group campsites, according to Travel Wisconsin. The Bugline has a spur into the park, so you can ride out, swim and ride home.

The village's parks guide adds 4.5 miles of hiking trails and a 32-acre dog exercise area inside the park. Waukesha County has hosted a seasonal beer garden, The Tap Yard, at the park's beach house in past seasons, so check the county's beer garden page before you plan around it.

Old Falls Village: a historic farmstead on County Line Road

Old Falls Village Historic Park is run by the Menomonee Falls Historical Society on the corner of Pilgrim Road and County Line Road, about 1 mile northeast of downtown.

The society says the park shows life from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s, with the Miller-Davidson House and gardens, the Depot Museum and the Little Red Barn Library among its buildings.

The village's parks guide counts 9 historic buildings on the former Miller-Davidson farmstead. The park is open to the public, and the society opens the buildings for tours on select weekends or by appointment.

From May to September it holds beer gardens and events on select weekends each month, and its calendar also lists a classic car show, Halloween Family Fun in October and a Silver Tea and Cookie Sale in December. Bring anyone who wants to know what this place looked like before the subdivisions arrived.

Indoor things to do: a cat figurine museum, a cinema and the library

Redner's Rescued Cat Figurine Mewseum is a nonprofit museum on Cleveland Avenue, about 1 mile east of downtown, with more than 3,500 cat figurines.

Its owners, Sphere and Hilary, began collecting in 2018 and give 100% of door proceeds to cat shelters and rescue groups.

Tours run by appointment with 24 hours' notice, on weekdays from 5 to 8 p.m. and on weekends after 11 a.m., and no appointment is needed on the third Sunday of the month. It is exactly as specific as it sounds, which is the whole appeal.

For a film, Marcus Menomonee Falls Cinema is on Premier Lane, about 1 mile northwest of downtown.

The Menomonee Falls Public Library on Pilgrim Road, about 1 mile southeast of downtown, makes a good rainy-afternoon base because a coffee bar runs on its second floor.

That bar is Latitude Cafe, which the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported is run by Amber and Daniel Levy, with sandwiches, soups and the usual espresso drinks.

Downtown, Peace Yoga Studio & Wellness Center on Appleton Avenue keeps a full calendar of evening classes, multi-week series and weekend breathwork sessions on its listing.

Pickleball and golf in Menomonee Falls

Menomonee Falls has two indoor pickleball clubs, and they suit different players.

Pickleball Kingdom on Shawn Circle has 17 climate-controlled indoor courts, a pro shop and drinks, including alcohol, while The Picklr on Appleton Avenue has 9 dedicated courts set against black walls that make the ball easier to see. Both take drop-in players and members, and Village Park downtown has 2 free outdoor courts.

If you are choosing between them, pickleball in Menomonee Falls comes down to court count, price and how often you plan to play.

Wanaki Golf Course is an 18-hole course on Lisbon Road, about 5.5 miles southwest of downtown, that bills itself as a year-round course.

Simulators and a fall and winter simulator league carry it through the cold months, and its bar and grill, The Turn, opens daily at 11 a.m.

For Packers games it also runs coach buses to Green Bay with a VIP pre-game tailgate. Its events page also lists live bands on several Saturday and Sunday nights in November and a Christmas party in December.

Village Park, splash pads and other parks for kids

Village Park, about 0.1 miles from the middle of downtown, has a performance stage, a great lawn, an accessible play area, a splash pad, tennis and pickleball courts, a picnic shelter and a paved trail loop.

Oakwood Park covers 54 acres with multi-use trails, athletic fields, a play structure and a pond with a fishing pier. Rotary Park adds a playground, picnic shelters and sand volleyball.

The village says it maintains 18 park sites and about 2,500 acres of public open space, so the list above is the short version.

Coffee, a deli and a wine bar

Two downtown coffee shops sit about 0.2 miles apart on Appleton Avenue. Fiddleheads, a Thiensville small-batch roaster that first opened in 1996, has its Menomonee Falls cafe there.

Percolatte, further up the street, is going for what its own site calls coffee with a touch of nostalgia. There are more coffee shops in Menomonee Falls than these two, from a library coffee bar to a veteran-owned truck that serves pup cups.

Three Cellars, on Lund Lane about 2.9 miles southeast of downtown, is a bar and bottle shop with 24 tap lines and 16 wines by the glass.

Pick anything from the retail shelves and the staff will open it for you to drink there.

Its site lists it open Monday to Thursday from 3 to 9 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from noon to 11 p.m., closed on Sunday, with no one under 21 after 6 p.m., so check before you go.

Books and secondhand finds

Epilogue Books on Main Street calls itself the local community bookstore, with a mix of gently used books, a few new ones and a children's nook.

Its site lists it open Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday until 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed Sunday through Tuesday.

For secondhand clothes and housewares, the Goodwill store on Water Tower Place is about 0.9 miles northwest of downtown.

The rest of the downtown strip is small shops, studios and cafes on Main Street and Appleton Avenue, and it is best seen on foot.

When is the Menomonee Falls farmers market?

The Greater Menomonee Falls Foundation Farmers Market ran on Wednesdays from June 3 to October 14 in 2026, from 2 to 6 p.m., with Sunday markets from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. between July 12 and September 13.

The 2026 season has finished, so look for next year's dates in spring; the Menomonee Falls Farmers Market is listed on Garfield Drive.

A day of things to do in Menomonee Falls

If you have one day, take it in this order. Start with coffee on Appleton Avenue and walk down to Lime Kiln Park for the falls and the kilns while the paths are quiet. Then pick up the Bugline, which is paved and runs west for 16 miles, so you can turn back whenever you like.

Lunch on Main Street, then spend the afternoon at Old Falls Village from May to September, or at the Mewseum on a third Sunday when no appointment is needed. On a cold or wet day, swap the trail for a court at one of the indoor pickleball clubs, which both open by 7 a.m. every day. End with a glass at Three Cellars.

Getting here and staying over

Menomonee Falls is about 14 miles northwest of downtown Milwaukee in a straight line. Islands.com puts the drive from Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport at about 35 minutes, and says airport buses run every 20 minutes but stop a few miles outside the village, so plan on a taxi or rideshare for the last stretch.

Home2 Suites by Hilton sits on Falls Parkway, about 0.6 miles northeast of downtown, and Islands.com notes its free breakfast, free parking, fitness center and pool.

SpringHill Suites by Marriott is next door on the same road, about 0.05 miles away.

Whatever else fills the day, finish where it started, on the path above the falls in Lime Kiln Park, while there is still light on the water.
