Lovely experience! The food was the best I’ve tried in the recent years. Our server, Henry, was very attentive and knowledgeable and timed every course perfectly.

Tried the winter tasting menu. Portions definitely on the smaller side but well executed and enjoyable. However at 3 courses the meals are presented as tasting portions not meal portions. But still enjoyable with great service.

★★★★★ Arum at Boschendal Wine Estate offers a superb fine-dining experience that celebrates local ingredients, bold flavours and beautiful presentation. We enjoyed the Winter Special Menu at R595, and every course felt carefully considered and impressively executed. The meal began with a wonderful bread selection. The kapokbos, feta and onion focaccia was aromatic, savoury and beautifully soft, while the wood-fired ciabatta had a crisp, lightly smoky crust. Both were excellent with the salted farm butter, silky pumpkin parfait and fragrant herb oil. The Cape octopus starter combined tender octopus with wonderfully crispy guanciale. Smoked corn and nutty brown butter added sweetness and richness, while the habanero brought gentle heat and the yellow tomato provided a fresh, tangy finish. The alternative starter, seared springbok tataki, showcased distinctly South African flavours. The springbok was delicately seared, with the marinated egg adding creaminess, fresh daikon bringing crunch and tempura farm mushrooms contributing an earthy crispness. The XO sauce tied everything together with a deep, savoury umami flavour. For the main course, the pan-roasted kingklip was moist and flaky beneath its crisp sourdough crust. The prawn farce added richness, while the date chutney introduced a subtle sweetness. A delicately spiced Malay velouté completed the dish beautifully without overpowering the fish. The 21-day dry-aged fillet was equally impressive—tender, deeply flavoured and perfectly complemented by crispy Jerusalem artichokes, sautéed greens and roasted vegetables. The olive jus added a rich, savoury and slightly fruity finish. Dessert maintained the same high standard. The Madagascan chocolate crémeux was smooth, dark and intensely chocolatey. Candied orange brought a welcome citrus lift, the honey tuile added a delicate crunch, and the olive oil gave the dessert an elegant, slightly peppery note. The alternative dessert featured caramelised honey and pain perdu, which was buttery, custardy and indulgent. The light coconut mousse balanced its richness, Boschendal grapes added freshness, and the Madagascan vanilla ice cream provided a beautifully fragrant and creamy finish. Arum delivers a refined but welcoming interpretation of contemporary South African cuisine. The combination of seasonal farm produce, imaginative flavour pairings and the magnificent Boschendal setting makes this a memorable experience. At R595, the Winter Special Menu also represents excellent value for food of this quality. Highly recommended for a special lunch or dinner in the Cape Winelands.
