Brookfield spends its weekends in two places at once, out on the water at a county park built in an old quarry and inside two malls on Bluemound Road, and most of the things to do in Brookfield follow that split. The city sits in eastern Waukesha County about 10 miles west of downtown Milwaukee, and it counted 41,464 people in the 2020 census. This is the short list of where to swim, play, laugh, shop and eat, with a straight-line distance from Brookfield Square for each so you can plan the loop yourself.
One thing to know before you start: there are two Brookfields. The City of Brookfield was incorporated in 1954 out of the Town of Brookfield, and a piece of the town still sits along the city's western edge. The Corners, the open-air shopping district on the west side, is in the town, and the town's administrator, quoted by Islands in 2026, said it serves as the downtown the town never had.

Outdoors: a quarry beach, a town park and 18 holes
Fox Brook Park is the place to start on a warm day, a Waukesha County park about 4 miles northwest of Brookfield Square with a swimming beach on a man-made lake.
The park itself stays open from sunrise to 10 p.m., and the concession stand runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in season, weather permitting. The county lists scuba diving among the lake's uses, alongside swimming and lounging on the beach.
Closer to home, Wray Park on Jaclyn Drive has a basketball court, a tennis court, a baseball field and a playground, and its listing gives hours of 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. It sits about 3.5 miles west of Brookfield Square, and its listing points to the Town of Brookfield.
For a course with more history, New Berlin Hills Golf Course is a public course founded in 1907, about 2.5 miles southeast in New Berlin, with a clubhouse eatery.
Courts, clubs and studios
Brookfield has an indoor option for many sports, and pickleball has a club of its own.
The Wisconsin Athletic Club on Water Tower Boulevard is the full-service option, with two swimming pools, a hot tub, steam and sauna rooms, classes and massage. For smaller rooms, Moonflower Yoga + Ayurveda Studio keeps its yoga classes unheated and small, and Renew Pilates Studio builds sessions around one-on-one attention.
Brookfield's studios also show up among the Milwaukee-area yoga studios and the ballet, hip-hop and ballroom studios around Waukesha, which compare them with their neighbours.
Comedy, movies and a night out
For a night out, start with stand-up at The Corners.
Brookfield Square has the other big indoor nights: a Movie Tavern by Marcus and a WhirlyBall, which the mall's owner, CBL Properties, says are the only ones of each in Wisconsin. For a standard multiplex with reclining seats in every auditorium, Marcus Majestic Cinema is about 3.75 miles west in Waukesha.
Live theater is under 2 miles east in the village of Elm Grove, where Sunset Playhouse on Wall Street has staged shows since 1960 and also runs a School for the Arts. It sits about 1.7 miles from Brookfield Square.
Brookfield with kids
A family day in Brookfield can split between Fox Brook's beach and playground in summer and an indoor play space when it is cold or wet. The indoor pick is Bug & Goose Play Cafe on Watertown Plank Road in Elm Grove, a 3,000-square-foot playroom for children from 6 months to 6 years, with a climb-up, slide-down structure and a separate crawler area. The space is open-plan, so parents can sit and watch from the chairs, and it books birthday parties and reserved play sessions.
In summer, the Village of Elm Grove Swimming Pool on Juneau Boulevard adds a splash pad, and sells snacks and sodas on site. It shares Elm Grove's village park with ball diamonds, tennis courts and a playground, about 1.7 miles northeast of Brookfield Square.
Wray Park is the quieter playground option on the west side, about 1.6 miles south of Fox Brook, so the two pair well on the same afternoon. At the malls, the Movie Tavern and WhirlyBall at Brookfield Square cover a rainy Saturday for older kids.
An evening in Elm Grove
Elm Grove is a separate village on Brookfield's eastern side, and its Watertown Plank Road strip, about 1.7 miles from Brookfield Square, fits a wine bar, an Irish pub and a theater into a few blocks, with a beer garden nearby.
Elm Grove Beer Garden on Juneau Boulevard pours Third Space beer in season, Wednesday through Sunday, according to its listing, with a rotating schedule of food trucks and live music. The same park has a stocked pond for catch-and-release fishing, according to the listing for its ball diamonds.
After dark, Wine Down pours flights from a list of more than 40 bottles, with new flights each month, and O'Donoghue's Irish Pub serves draft beer and broasted chicken in an old stone house with a patio. Sunset Playhouse is about a quarter mile south on Wall Street if you want a show before the bar.
Shopping on Bluemound Road
Bluemound Road has two malls about 2.7 miles apart: Brookfield Square at Moorland Road on the east end and The Corners on the west.
The Corners is the opposite style, an open-air district laid out on streets with English names like Lord Street and High Street, parked underground for free, with Von Maur as its department store. Both are covered store by store in shopping in Brookfield, and the secondhand side of town, from consignment at Ruby Isle to resale on Bluemound, has its own rundown of Brookfield's thrift and consignment shops.
Where to eat
Many of Brookfield's chain sit-down restaurants are at Brookfield Square, where CBL lists Cooper's Hawk, Fleming's, Lou Malnati's, Uncle Julio's and Bravo among its dining tenants. Away from the malls, Mr. B's on Capitol Drive is a Bartolotta steakhouse that describes itself as a classic Italian steakhouse for steaks, chops and seafood.
Up on Lisbon Road, Schmidty's Bar and Grill is the neighbourhood bar of the bunch, with live music, car shows, bag and poker leagues, trivia and a Friday fish fry, according to its listing. The full map of restaurants in Brookfield also takes in the row of restaurants on Watertown Plank Road in Elm Grove.
Mr. B's is also part of the wider comparison of Milwaukee-area steakhouses.
Staying over
Brookfield's hotels sit close together on South Moorland Road and Bluemound Road, four of the five in our hotel guide within a mile of Brookfield Square. Events land at the Brookfield Conference Center on Moorland Road, which has an 18,000-square-foot ballroom and an attached 168-room Hilton Garden Inn. Which of the hotels along Moorland Road suits you depends on whether you want a pool, a kitchen or the shortest walk to the mall.
Brookfield through the seasons
Summer is the outdoor season, with July averaging a high of 82 degrees, and winter brings about 45 inches of snow in an average year. That is when the courts, the clubs and the malls carry the weekend. Month-by-month numbers and what each season suits are in Brookfield weather by month.
A day in Milwaukee
Downtown Milwaukee is about 10 miles east of Brookfield Square, which sits off I-94. That puts the Milwaukee County Zoo, a Brewers game at American Family Field and shows at the Marcus Center within reach, and they are the attractions Visit Brookfield points its visitors toward. Start with things to do in Milwaukee, which works through the city neighbourhood by neighbourhood.
