Where Three Lakes sits
Three Lakes is in northeastern Oneida County, in the lake-and-forest country Wisconsin calls the Northwoods. The downtown sits at the junction of US-45, which runs north and south, and WI-32, which runs east toward the lakes and the national forest.
Eagle River, the nearest larger town, is about 9.5 miles north-northwest in a straight line, just over the Vilas County line. Rhinelander, the county seat, is to the southwest. The town borders the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, and Land O' Lakes, on the Michigan border, is about 22.8 miles north.
Three Lakes runs on Central Time, and its ZIP code is 54562.
How far is Three Lakes from the cities?
Three Lakes is a drive from anywhere you would fly into. These are the distances and driving times the Three Lakes visitors bureau gives:
| From | Distance | Driving time |
|---|---|---|
| Milwaukee | 230 miles | 3 hours 45 minutes |
| Chicago | 320 miles | 5 hours 30 minutes |
| Central Wisconsin Airport | 94 miles | 1 hour 35 minutes |
| Rhinelander-Oneida County Airport | 27 miles | 35 minutes |
US-45 runs straight into town from the south, and the last stretch from any direction is two-lane road through the forest. Allow extra time on Friday afternoons in summer, when everyone heading up north is on the same roads.
Winter driving changes the math. Roads up here are plowed, but snow and ice can add a lot of time, so check conditions before you set out.
Flying in
The nearest airport with airline service is Rhinelander-Oneida County Airport, about 27 miles away by road. Central Wisconsin Airport near Wausau is the next option, at about 94 miles. Either way, you will need a rental car.
Three Lakes also has its own small airport. Three Lakes Municipal Airport, opened in 1956 and owned by the town, sits about 3 miles southeast of downtown and serves private pilots.
The town and the downtown
Three Lakes is two things on a map. The town of Three Lakes is a civil town of about 99.9 square miles, with about 81.5 square miles of land and 18.4 of water, home to 2,413 people at the 2020 census. Inside it is the unincorporated community of Three Lakes, the small downtown at the crossroads, which most people mean when they say the name.
The downtown is compact: Superior Street is the main street, with the theater, the pub and the beer gardens, and the winery and cheese shop a block or two off it. The resorts, marinas and golf course are spread out east along WI-32 toward Big Stone Lake.
A post office called Three Lakes has operated since 1885, and the town sits at an elevation of about 1,657 feet.
How Three Lakes got its name
The name comes from the railroad. When the Milwaukee, Lake Shore and Western Railway pushed a new line north toward Watersmeet, Michigan, the route bent around three lakes, Maple, Townline and Range Line, and the surveyors' note became the town's name. The town was formally organized in 1881.
Tourism began to take over in the late 1930s, once cars and the old logging roads made the lakes easy to reach. It has been the town's main business since the 1970s, and the lakes that gave the town its name are now the reason most people come.
The neighbors
Heading north on US-45 toward Eagle River, one stop worth knowing is Sorella, an Italian dinner spot between the two towns, about 4 miles from downtown Three Lakes. Eagle River itself has more shops, more lodging and the north end of the Three Eagle Trail.
Between the two, the Burnt Rollways boat hoist lifts boats from one chain of lakes to the other, about 6.7 miles north of Three Lakes in a straight line.
Further north, Land O' Lakes sits right on the Michigan line, about 22.8 miles away, an easy day trip with its own lakes and the source of the Wisconsin River nearby. Rhinelander, to the southwest, is the place for big-box shopping, the hospital and the airport. Crandon lies to the south-southeast.
Not the other Three Lakes
If a map app sends you somewhere warm, you have the wrong one. There is a Three Lakes in Miami-Dade County, Florida, and another in Snohomish County, Washington, and both turn up in searches.
The one in this guide is Three Lakes, Wisconsin, ZIP code 54562, in Oneida County. If you are entering it into a GPS, use the town name with the state, or aim for the US-45 and WI-32 junction.
Getting around once you are here
Plan on a car. Downtown is walkable, but the lakes, resorts, marinas and trailheads are spread over a town of about 100 square miles, so you will need your own wheels.
Bikes work well for the downtown and the Three Eagle Trail north toward Eagle River. Boats are the other way to get around in summer, and a lot of people reach dinner on the chain that way.
Most lodging in Three Lakes is on the lakes east of downtown, so where you stay decides how much you drive.
The season matters as much as the map, so check how warm and how snowy Three Lakes gets each month before you decide when to come.
From the crossroads, the winery, the theater and the rest of downtown Three Lakes are a block or two away.
