We arrived just before the kitchen was closing. We were the only guests at that point. The staff were happy to serve us and our croissant chicken meal was delicious! The service was great and we would return to try out more meals.
Belgian cuisine and estate wine on Bovlei Road
Roots Bistro on Dunstone Estate is a Belgian restaurant in Wellington set on the grounds of Dunstone Country Estate along Bovlei Road. We serve multi-course meals featuring dishes such as bitterballen maison, Karoo lamb shank, filet mignon with pepper sauce, and Belgian waffles alongside our estate-produced wines. Diners can sit on our front or back porches and explore the on-site art gallery during their visit. We are closed on Tuesdays.

The word for the day was "balance". We had the fillet steak and the Strawberry Pav. Everything was great. The chef understands balance. Floyd and his team are friendly and service is great. We'll be back soon!
Dunstone Bistro, you've outdone yourselves! The service was top-notch, but what really stole the show was the humility and warmth of Miguel and Chris - they truly made us feel at home . And then, the food... oh, the food! The chef is a culinary wizard, crafting dishes that are not just meals, but experiences . From the first bite to the last, it was a flavour adventure! And let's not forget the wine - Dirk and Maudie, your Bella Bella is OUTSTANDING
Our daughter decided to take us on a “road trip lunch” to celebrate our 50th anniversary as the restaurant which she chose was way out in the Wellington area. Must say the midday trip was enjoyable as the drive through the farm-lands was very picturesque, green and pleasant. The restaurant “Roots Bistro” is situated on the “DunStone Estate” a small wine farm. This is a Hidden Gem as we discovered here is a quiet place where you can order your food and enjoy it in an ambiance of its own, where you can get up and take a break while strolling through the small but well organised Art Gallery. Because it was a special day for us the staff went the extra mile to make it just that for us on arrival we find a Special Card explaining what 50 years was in Days, Weeks, Months, Minutes and Seconds. When we were seated a Complementary Bottle of Champagne 🍾 was opened! Wow 😮 How awesome 🤩 and special. The manager came to welcome and wish us well. The staff on duty was fantastic and very helpful. The Menu Card has much to offer. They offer 2, 3 and 5 course meals @ set prices and you can enjoy wine 🍷 pairing @ R 90 for 3 glasses, what an excellent price. We found favour as the Chef offered us the opportunity to order any dish on the menu to make up our 3 course meal at no extra cost. Starters 1. Octopus 🐙 (roasted garlic, aioli, chorizo, wild dandelion). 2. Bitterballen Maison (traditional crispy on the outside and creamy inside with French mustard aioli. (Paired with Roots 🍷 Grenache 2023) Absolutely amazing and delicious, well presented. Mains: - 1. 2 x Jarret d’Agneau du Karoo au Jus aux Herbes(🤔 Slow cooked LAMB-SHANK) 2. Filet Mignon Sauce au Poivre(Steak with mushrooms in Red Wine 🍷 Jus). (Paired with Roots Shiraz 2020🍷) Must say the meats were so tender and insidious-lii delicious 🤤. Desserts: - 1. Belgian Waffle with ice cream and berries. 2. Chocolate Belge Velvety Belgian Chocolate. 3. Amarula Dom Pedro..(Paired with Roots Grenache Shiraz 🍷2023) We had a truly wonderful day here! Theresseating on the front porch the back porch and even in the backyard. Lots of parking. We recommend a visit to this establishment….
A little off the familiar track up Wellington way, our trip to Roots Bistro at Dunstone Estate turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. It is a smaller winery with a more intimate charm and unique character that is sometimes missing at some of the bigger estates. Maudie and Dirk were wonderful hosts with a great personal touch. For red wine lovers their 2023 grenache or and the grenache/shiraz blend were a good choice. The well prepared menu by an enthusiastic young chef at the bistro allowed for a long, lazy lunch. It was an afternoon well spent in a lesser known yet very beautiful wine region and definitely worth a visit.
