A hidden gem and a true celebration of South African hospitality. A few days ago, I randomly watched a rugby podcast featuring Danie Steytler, speaking passionately about his family’s Pinotage. I was so intrigued that I even took a screenshot. Little did I know that, while visiting Cape Town, I would end up meeting the man himself! Today, we enjoyed an incredible wine tasting and traditional South African braai at Kaapzicht Wine Estate. What an experience! The family presented 10 different Pinotages from various South African wineries. Think about that for a moment. A family proudly showcasing the wines of other producers alongside their own. That tells you everything about their values, their culture and their genuine commitment to preserving and celebrating Pinotage. Then came the braai. Watching Danie and his wife personally working the grill, with the children running around and helping host guests, was something special. This wasn’t a commercial wine tasting. It felt like being welcomed into someone’s family home. The food was simply outstanding. Beautifully cooked steak with chimichurri sauce, fresh avocado and tomato salads, traditional boerewors, and delicious toasted cheese, tomato and onion sandwiches. Nothing pretentious. Just simple, honest South African food, cooked with love and executed perfectly. And just when we thought the afternoon couldn’t get any better, out came the final wine, accompanied by a platter of rich brownies, fresh strawberries and homemade ice cream on sticks. Every dish was beautifully prepared, every wine thoughtfully presented, and the entire experience delivered with genuine warmth by an exceptional team. What impressed me most wasn’t simply the quality of the wine or food. It was the family. Their pride, humility, generosity and obvious determination to protect the heritage of Pinotage while keeping authentic South African hospitality alive. Kaapzicht isn’t just a winery. It’s a family preserving a legacy and sharing it generously with everyone who visits. An absolute hidden gem. If you’re visiting Stellenbosch, put Kaapzicht at the very top of your list. A must visit!
